| Proper Care and Maintenance for Your Mobility Scooters
When there are elderly who are restricted in walking due to arthritis and other muscular degeneration, a family simply finds mobility scooters to be essential needs for their homes. This is because a mobility scooter provides the disabled loved one an opportunity for freedom of movement both indoors and outdoors. Its benefit of allowing one to move out and about by themself is fully appreciated by many.
But like all mechanical and electrical devices, mobility scooters need to be cared for to ensure their longevity and safety for the user. After all, they don't come cheap. Manufacturers and sellers of mobility scooters provide repair services but they won't be there every day to oversee it. Studying the manual provided with the mobility scooter is a good idea and if drivers have a basic checklist before they start using their scooter, there are also some basic things you can do to care for your mobility equipment.
Tyre Care
The tyres of your mobility scooter, we may say is its most important part. You won't be able to go anywhere if they are damaged or not in good condition. Check the tyre pressure daily especially before using the equipment. Ensure that it is pumped to the recommended pressure based on factory specifications which you can find in the manual. This is necessary so that the tubing inside the tires are kept in proper place, otherwise, if the tubing is not in its proper place it tends to rotate in the wheel and this friction may puncture the tyre, damaging it.
Check for wheel alignment too. This is for your safety so you won't get off balance. Another part which provides for your safety are the wheel bearings, so ensure you have ones of best quality and that these are fixed properly on the mobility scooter.
Overall, inspect the tyres for general wear and tear to know if they might need to be replaced. When tyres are kept in good condition, you can be sure that your motor will not have a hard time running too, reducing its burnout.
Battery
The battery of a mobility scooter is rechargeable. However, these are the types of batteries which need to be cooled down first before being recharged. This makes its life span longer. So remove the battery from the equipment when not in use to keep it cool and if you do need to recharge it after use, cool it down first and then recharge it. Recharging will also be much faster this way so you will save on electricity too.
Check it for any signs of leakage or acid erosion and get it repaired when this happens to avoid any further injury to your scooter.
Small Parts
Finally, inspect the fuses, belts, nuts, bolts, controls and cables for any loose or damaged connection. Get them fixed or replaced as soon as possible to prevent bigger damages.
Washing your mobility scooter is also a must. It's hygienic and damage due to mud and rust can be prevented. |
